Stephem, thanks for reminding me about AC's YVR-SYD service. I knew about (& had looked at availability for) YVR-AKL via NZ, but taking AC never occurred to me, for some reason.
Harryhv, thanks for the warning RE rebooking. I probably will have a spare 30,000 miles to gamble with by the time NZ opens up (*), but, from the advice here, it looks like I'm better off waiting.

(*) If I book another MR JFK-SJO routed via PHX in A class on US, I will fly ~9100 miles over two days and earn over 56K miles (having passed the 55K threshold before then) for ~$750 - this would give me plenty of miles to spare.
