Certainly not my recollection. Qantas introduced the QF29/30 service in response to BA's decision to cut MEL from it's network. It did so by realigning the existing 4x weekly SYD-HKG-LHR to become 7x weekly MEL-HKG-LHR. This had a number of benefits:
  • BA/QF number of daily LHR/Oz services reduces by only 3 per week
  • QF are able to extend (replace) their existing nightly MEL-HKG into LHR
  • The existing BA LHR-SIN-MEL is turned around at SIN enabling an earlier evening departure back to LHR
  • QF are able to utilise their LHR CC-base to staff for LHR-HKG-LHR at lower cost
  • QF have 2x daily to LHR from both SYD and MEL

Now what I *do* find interesting is that BA should continue to cut when QF is looking to cut the premium (F) offerings on MEL-HKG-LHR.
