Remember, there is a Qantas JV that BA are earning profit from, which would include HKG rotations to Sydney from LHR.
The QF HKG flight goes on to MEL and BA only codeshares with QF for LHR-MEL, not LHR-HKG. BA was really annoyed when QF started LHR-HKG-MEL, just as QF would be if BA had launched SYD-LAX (not that it actually could) before yields on that route went through the floor.
If you look at BA's monthly traffic stats over the past year, Asia-Pacific traffic has fallen very sharply, much more than TATL, the Middle East and Africa.
