I just finished talking to a rep at Marriott and was informed the bonuses are based on your stay history. The more you stayed in the past, the less the points. If you have only stayed a few times at Marriott, your point offer will be greater.

The program is designed to pull customers from Hilton, Hyatt, etc. It is not designed to reward loyal customers.
