Delta's policy is the IATA standard: the carrier delivering you late to your connection is responsible (financially, rebooking assistance) for onward travel to your destination.

DL is not purposely going to open up more award inventory so long as you have legal connections. If something fortuitous happens with DL or partner inventory, jump on it.

Don't agonize over this for months. A journey is a fine thing.
