Are you flying FCO-LHR by BA? If so, you won't need to re-check your bags if you fly LHR-MAN on BA. The bags will go straight through to MAN, even if you're on two separate tickets. There's no Customs border between FCO and LHR or MAN anyway so you don't need to clear Customs however you do it (you use the blue Customs channel). You will clear UK immigration at LHR.
