As Rich said it depends on the CSR taking your reservation if they can guarantee or request smoking and bed type. However, it has been known to happen that the CSR says one thing but doesn't key it into the computer correctly.

I used to think only Marriott's guarantee rooms, but today when I made reservations at both Courtyard and Fairfield, the agent specifically guaranteed my room preference. So I don't know..
