I think that's what most hotels want to be; your home away from home. So if you're staying "home" all the time, shouldn't your "home" look the same everywhere you go?
On the other hand, while I like a little bit of variety, I really don't mind the good ole Marriott interior; because they actually look okay to me (love the mirror above the headboard). What I'm sick of is the Courtyard interior, which I think looks like crap in several places. OK, so CY isn't really up there with the big guys but if Hilton Garden Inn is Hilton's answer to Courtyard, I must say they did a much better job with it.
Oh, did anyone else notice the new Courtyards that are being built now have ugly-yellow walls?? What a color scheme. I saw two already (in Emeryville and Brisbane, CA); 10-storey high. Tallest CY I've ever seen.
