The scenario described now has me wondering... what if I legitimately miss my connection on the outbound leg (e.g. fall ill or even asleep in the lounge and don't get to the gate on time)? Will my showing up at the gate, albeit late, be enough for them to maintain my return segment?

I'm not going to attempt an intentional ditch, I'll just find another more expensive way.
