This strategy only works when you are ditching the very last segment of the entire itinerary. For example if you found a fare that was cheaper going LHR-YYZ-LHR-VIE than going LHR-YYZ-LHR you could fairly safely ditch the final LHR-VIE segment (although technically doing so violates the T&C of the ticket).
