I don't understand the whole "saving points up for retirement" mentality. Money can gather interest and doesn't expire.

If you alternate points and paying for flights it would mean you could keep partial status and not let your points go to waste.

Say you have SE status this year - which continues to next
Next year use your points using the IKK, maybe fly enough to get elite status
The year after spend enough to get up to SE
Or if you have enough points maybe spend two years of points before getting back to SE.

You save money (that you can spend in your retirement!), you get rid of your points and you don't have a glut of stuff that you've been hoarding that might expire.
