Rudi--As I've done this a few times, here's how I believe it works. When you purchase anything in the Marriott's hotel shop, show your Marquis card. If your purchases qualify for the 10% discount, they'll figure it in; if some or all of what you buy doesn't qualify, they'll tell you. Once the applicable discount has been allowed, charge the purchase to your room. The discounted purchase amount will then appear on your hotel bill. Even if you're choosing to get miles instead of Marriott points, you'll at least then be paying with a credit card (instead of paying cash in the store for what is often a small purchase) and the charge to your card will be worth some credit card miles. Of course if you ever opt to receive Marriott points for a given stay, the charges from the shop add to your total only if you've had them posted to your overall Marriott hotel bill.
