Mod, it may be good to move this to the Japan Forum.

Japan is a phone country. Nearly everything is done with a phone. For mobile PCs, they used PHS modems then migrated to HSDPA. You will only find WiFi in residential areas and airports. Even hotels tend to offer wired ethernet.
