I think the current rules for upgrading are fine as they are... the next step up would just be SE can upgrade from Y and Elite can't upgrade.

I maintain the stance that those who accuse SE taking all J class seat is outrageous. How many SEs can there possibily be one particular flight? I could be wrong but It seems like the only problem is 1 single route YYZ-LHR... maybe AC should consider adding more flights or restrict upgrades on those routes like they did this year?

Maybe the best solution is just to limit ALL upgrades to day of departure and everyone can upgrade from any fare with priority based on status and fare paid.... but this is no different that eliminating the upgrade benefit!

There's another reason I'd favour the elimination of Aeroplan upgrade benefits. There would no longer be any reason for loyalty to AC, so I'd be free to book on other carriers. I would not have hesitated to buy four premium class tickets on BA.
I am curious about this AfterBurner... since you say that you ALWAYS buy J class.. and since paid J class on any carrier will get you lounge access, what makes you keep your lotalty to them now? However, since you'll make SE next year, you'll get guarantee seats for paid J, so it'll not be a problem for you anymore
