If I were you, I'd fly NZ or UA to Australia. Less AP miles. More availability. Better service (with NZ). With NZ, I've found availability to be pretty good within a month of travel, as long as you aren't booking around Christmas. Look at the YVR-AKL direct flight too, as well as SFO-AKL and LAX-AKL.
