At the risk of incurring the wrath of those who know the ins and outs of the program better than me, I am pretty sure that the OP would not have been eligible for the $50 cash guarantee.

From the terms and conditions...

In order to qualify for the Guarantee, the member's Marriott Rewards number, Elite status, and bed type preferences must be included with the reservation. Reservations made through meeting planners, travel agents, wholesalers or other third party sources must include this information in order to be included in the Guarantee.
The OP stated in the first post that he asked to have his MR number added at check-in. They should have given the arrival gift, but he would not have qualified for the elite benefits guarantee - if I am reading this correctly.
