I agree it can feel frustrating to get closed out on an FFN award at the hotel of your choice, not to mention when you have the forethought to book early and get something at one of the most popular properties, and then sometimes other things interfere and you have to cancel and all availability is gone by then. Notwithstanding, I think FFNs are a great promotion, I'm thrilled it exists and recurs, and I don't think it's realistic to expect endless availability on it at the top properties in the chain.
