AC still has the rights to New Delhi - however they are not interested in flying the route. It was:
- not meeting their desired level of profitability
- early morning fog in New Delhi often caused extensive (6hr) delays - highly inconveniencing passengers who were flying just LHR-YYZ or LHR-YVR and waiting for the inbound aircraft.
There are three cheap Star Alliance ways to get to New Delhi.
Lufthansa - Toronto-Frankfurt-Delhi
(around CAD$1800 from consolidators)
AC/Austrian combo - Toronto-Vienna-Delhi
(around CAD$1600 from consolidators. Note: Toronto-Vienna is on AC, and Vienna-Delhi on Austrian)
AC/Thai combo
Route 1: Toronto-London (AC) then London-Bangkok-Delhi (Thai)
Route 2: Toronto-LA (AC), LA-Bangkok-Delhi (Thai)
Both routes cost around CAD$1600. Note Route 2 yields around 25K Q miles roundtrip.
Also note, the Lufthansa option yields the fewest Aeroplan points as only 1/2 points for the Frankfurt-Delhi sector in coach.
