Have a look at expertflyer.com.
If a seat has a "X" then it is blocked. If it is a solid colour then it is occupied.
For example a typical European A320 will have 1A = X, 1C = X, 1D = X, 1F = X when the plane is empty.
If you see 1A = X, 1C = solid, 1D = X, 1F = X, then all of A, D & F are free but blocked atnd 1C has been grabbed by a Premier/Gold.
