I also prefer the GH in SF. PH is also good, but, in my opinion it is not one of their better PH properties.

Comparing GH to PH:

1) Rooms and service fractionally better at PH, BUT no official suite upgrades for Diamond at PH anymore. I'm not sure what they do for Diamond upgrades in practice lately, but the program no longer says they should upgrade you to a suite.

2) No RC at PH. One of the better RCs iun my experience at GH.

3) Location x 3. It depends are where you are going, but you will usually need taxis from PH which can sometimes be hard to get. PH is in the financial district, with not as many places open and close to the hotel at night. There are more walking destinations for most people from GH, and a lot of good restaurants and shopping right outside the door.

4) GHSF has Some of the better rooms of any GH I frequesnt, and high speed internet.

5) GH is considerably less expensive.
