we are using our JR Pass to Hokkaido first and then by the time we get to go to Osaka, it would be the 4th day of our 7-day pass - would use Shinkansen from Tokyo to Osaka. not going to Nara, been there last time.

would go to Kobe and Kyoto (just to see the futuristic station at Kyoto though.)
