I assume you mean that UA has enough passengers traveling MEL-USA since no local traffic allowed on MEL-SYD (and there are probably 30 flights a day on other carriers on the latter route anyway).
As I recall, there are circumstances under which you can take this route just MEL-SYD, such as if you are travelling on a *A RTW ticket. Maybe someone can correct me if I am wrong.
