Virtuoso agents do not charge a fee for their services (well, mine doesn't!). They earn their commission from the property/cruise/tour, etc...
Quite frankly, Virtuoso is the best thing to happen to my travel planning. I used to always book via AMEX FHR, but I found that I rarely received upgrades and always spoke to a different person on the phone who knew nothing about me or my interests.
With Virtuoso you have your own dedicated agent who is matched to you based on your travel interests. My agent has personally traveled to most of the countries I visit and has even stayed in most of the properties I want to stay in. As such, she is incredibly helpful when it comes to planning my leisure trips. I also use her for business travel as well.
She always goes above and beyond, and has even booked rooms for me only a few hours before I arrived.
The only thing Virtuoso is not good for is airfare.
