Maybe so, but I've done it myself (4 pax , 1xadult miles, 1x2-4-1, 1x kids miles, 1xkids cash) in CW IIRC. There was nothing available LHR-CPT, but a call to BAEC and they put us on a LHR-JNB-CPT for the same miles. We also booked later JNB-CPT than was neccessary and met up with some friends for lunch in JNB.

This was around 3 years ago, and rules seem to be applied more vigorously nowadays. YMMV.

Is Comair not considered "BA metal"? ("Operated by" as opposed to codeshare)
