Ah! You're bringing back memories!
I remember the day I moved to France (13 years ago now!) and getting off at Charles de Gualle, walking up to the Georges V where a friend was working. I stayed with her while finding my own place, before meeting my French husband...
Enough of that!
What I suggest you do is take the Air France bus, which drops you off just a few yards away. It's much more secure than other transport since everyone is getting on at the airport (as opposed to the RER where people are on and off, able to grab your wallet and run!) I used to work at CDG and would get a little nap in on the way into town. No worries as the drivers wont go to the depot with you still asleep in the back... (they're actually quite nice)
By the time you get through customs, immigration, get your bag, get your AF bus tickets, climb abord, ride into town... Well, it'll almost be check-in time right there! Also, you will probably be so close that your room might already be ready. If not, you're well placed to find a decent restaurant to have lunch (after dropping off your bags with the bell man) and by the time you're done, you'll be able to walk in your room.
Last summer, we stayed in the Mission Inn in Riverside Ca. (recommended!) We left our bags with them and headed to the pool. We ordered poolside "room" service and actually didn't even bother going to the room until well after the porter brought us the keys...
I also suggest that you try to sleep on the flight as much as possible. Not a good airplane sleeper? Then just rest your body and eyes (airplane air is so dry!) and that physically, is almost as good as sleep (says my doctor). Don't pressure yourself into counting sheep but staring at a screen the whole time is not a great idea.
Stay up until at least 8pm and take your melatonin (don't you love that stuff?!?) You'll be rearing to go in the morning.
Enjoy your trip!
