Tickets are valid for a year from date of purchase (not longer), so if the OP thinks his return might be pushed into October 2010 he should wait to purchase.
It appears Delta's cheapest fare in the market, ULJV5 on the dates I checked, does not permit changes. The next fare, LLJV3, permits changes for Euro 100. A careful reading of the full fare rules is needed.
The above is correct don't book the ULJV5 fare if you are going to make changes. All the other thru coach fares allow changes with/without penality and most have a max stay or 12 months. You could also give us a call and we will go over all the rules of the fare you are going to purchase, however we charge a $20 direct ticketing charge for that expertise.
