Overall I'm not unhappy I bought it, but it's not a true substitute for a serious rolling laptop bag or backpack. Score: 7/10
Craig, thanks for the comments.
I should perhaps add as an FY that this bag can be found now for around $110.
Some comments.
The fact that it can't be overloaded is actually a pro in my eyes. Most people (including yours truly) tend to overload bags. It is good when at least your bag knows when to say NO.
I have never even had the idea of having the backpack straps and shoulder strap attached at the same time. I only use the backpack strap, sometimes with one shoulder only, because it is lighter than the shoulder strap.
As for the myriad of organizational pockets, I think the BB107 solves this quite well. My Tenba satchel (see original review) has the pockets spread out in every compartment. In the BB107 you know the little stuff is in the front pocket, so you only have to search there. I have had only minor problems finding things in there (a camera battery for the G9). But I do agree that this compartment could open a little wider. It would also be nice to have a lighter shade of grey for the lining. My battery is practically the same shade of grey which didn't make things easier.
The two other compartments open very wide for my taste.
I don't use the supplied computer sleeve. I put my computer in a poly-bubble mailer envelope. Very good protection with minimal bulk and weight. Low key, too. I think the original sleeve is for 15" models and the idea is that you use that compartment ONLY for the laptop or only for something else. Multi-use is on your own risk.
I think it is not intended to be substitute for a rolling briefcase or a full backpack. Both of those are intended for rather heavy and bulky loads. The BB107 limits those, as you correctly say.
It is intended as a universal bag. A briefcase that you can use as a backpack on your way to work and then walk into the boardroom with something that really looks like the bag of a serious professional. At the same time you can use it around town or as a daypack for tourism without looking like a tourist. You can even take it to an art opening or a dinner invitation to friends without them wondering why you are still lugging your briefcase around. It is this versatility that characterizes the BB107 and differentiates it from messenger bags, photo bags, briefcases and the rolling bags and backpacks you mention.
I'd say that if I had to live with only one bag and that bag should serve as my gadget bag, daypack, briefcase, personal item, laptop bag etc. for any and all situations I could hardly imagine anything else but the BB107.
If it were only for casual situations maybe the Tenba satchel would even win but it's simply too sporty and thus does not fit into all situations.
