This is a common complaint on this thread - try searching the term 'upgradeable'.
One solution is to put the reservation on hold at the Q fares, then call the EXP desk. They will reprice the reservation to an upgradeable fare and apply your upgrades. It takes about 10 minutes.

This thread will help you search on the ITA matrix, but as other have better to hold a reservation, call the EXP desk, and have them price the upradeable fare for you.
