I think that this is the better question within the US as, based on what
kebosabi says, US places don't have people grate their own. In fact, over about 8 or so trips to Japan, and various parts from Tokyo to the middle of nowhere, I've always received pre-made wasabi.
This stuff is still real wasabi, and we use a tube wasabi at home. This is more than acceptable for us.
