+1. On the airlines I have flown SW, UA, US, FL, and DL they just want to be able to attach the gate check tag to the stroller. The "stroller occupant or lack thereof in your case" doesn't need to be anywhere in the vicinty when you get the stoller gate check. No guarantees, but I think you have a very high probability of success with this method.

It is different on international carriers. It has been my experiences with LH, OZ and CX that the gate check item (i.e. our stroller) was put in a plastic bag and a baggage claim ticket was printed and applied to the bag at ticketing...it was quite impressive compared to the US airlines method of gate checking items. We dropped off our 'bagged' stroller at the gate.
