I'm trying to book a trip between AUS and SFO and the website only offers AUS-SFO via LAX or via DFW at the cheap rates. It seems that AUS-SFO via ORD is always twice as expensive. How come? I thought via ORD is just as valid as via DFW and it yields nearly twice as many miles (since i'm not an elite, and trying to qualify for gold). Is there any way I can try to route via JFK or do something like AUS-LAX-ORD-SFO? I don't mind paying a marginally higher fare but I also don't have all the money in the world to throw around...
