San Francisco Reviews(as Diamond): Grand Hyatt, Park Hyatt, Hyatt Regency Embarcadero

Over the past several weekends we blew out our remaining faster free nights which had been extended from 5/31 to 6/30 for us. We are locals and here's a summary of Diamond treatment and the hotels in general.

Our preference was as follows:

Best: Grand Hyatt (best service, best room and particularly best view, most interesting and happening spot of the three during weekend times)
Next best: Park Hyatt
Next but still good: Hyatt Regency Embarcadero

Grand Hyatt

The Room: Preblocked for a king nonsmoking "work" room with FAX. Asked at check in "did we get a nice room?" The agent kindly said "it's not one of the better rooms. We're sold out but let me see what I can do." Offered us the "suite" part of a three room connector on 32nd Regency Club floor. Had a murphy bed, was HUGE, and looked right out over the bay (view to north and east). Nice of her. Bed was not the most comfortable I've stayed in, but certainly no complaint on the real estate.

Diamond amenity: Offered card at check in. Chose wine & antipasta plate. Food portion was the worst of the three amenities, justa few slices of cheese and a tiny portion of meat and some crackers. But the Chilean 750ml full bottle of Chardonnary was plentiful, and good. Best beverage amenity of the three hotels. Only problem was, we asked for it to be sent right up, and it didn't arrive for 2 hours.

Regency Club: Open. Gentleman was very nice and kept the food out slightly past 7pm so we could nosh. Liquor drinks are not free, uses honor card system. Not crowded at 7pm Saturday night. Sunday morning, crowded, but very nice selection of fruits and good pastries. Fresh squeezed OJ and Starbucks. Plentiful and attentive to cleaning and restocking.

Grandviews lounge & restaurant: We had a 2-for-1 from the Marin County entertainment book, so we decided to try dinner here. It was excellent. Nice window table with great view; one of us had the Filet and the other the Sea Bass, both dishes were superb. $80 for drinks & nice dinner for two using Entertainment. Service very good.

Park Hyatt

The Room: Originally assigned by 1-800-CHECKIN to a king nonsmoking room on lower floor 9. Asked nicely at check in if something up higher was available. Given a corner suite on the top floor. Very nice room with views of the bay, Maritime Plaza and the Embarcadero center. High enough above construction site not to be bothered (and yes, they start work EARLY on Saturday morning). Lovely suite, by far the best bathroom of the three. Balcony.

Diamond amenity: No card at check in, but agent said our amenity was on the way. Chose wine & antipasta plate. By far best food portion of the three. Selection of BIG blocks of nice cheeses. Probably $20 worth of cheese. 375 ml bottle of Napa Syrah. We haven't actually drack this one yet. We were in the room getting ready for 1 hour after check in, and it didn't arrive. Was sitting in our rooom when we returned for the evening.

Regency Club: There isn't one. It's interesting that the one page PDF fact sheet lists that this hotel has a Regency Club and that all rooms have access.

Hyatt Regency

The Room: Used 1-800-CHECKIN. Agent went out of his way to secure for us a bay view balcony room, which was nice of him. we didn't inquire about a suite at check in and were happy with this room, although clearly it was the smallest and least spectacular of the three. Weird shape, balcony doors needed WD40 and could hear the noise from outside. Good view when standing out on balcony, but not from inside the room.

Diamond amenity: Offered card at check in. Chose wine & cheese. Food portion good but not as wonderful as Park's. 375 ml of Phillips Napa Chardonnay. Nice.

Regency Club: Closed. Instead, we were given breakfast certificates good for a continental buffet or $10.50 towards a menu item. The continental was okay, but not as nice as the Regency buffet at the Grand Hyatt.

Hope this helps any of you considering one of these three in SFO!
