If you have no bags checked then there is no need to clear immigration at AKL.
I had plenty of time for this turnaround and so opted to go through immigration just for the heck of it. Should I ever have the urge to do another AKL turnaround though, I might use your suggestion.
I've still got a few more turnaround posts to make, but have a flight to catch now, so will save them for another time.
