On top of that they were $25 more expensive than Hertz and I only booked it for the 3400 miles.
Well, I'm afraid to say I'm also seeing very horrid things when trying to book Europcar in Australia.

The bmi branded Europcar site, for a 15 day rental, is:
- returning a cost AU$1,186 pretty much regardless of pick-up point
- isn't checking that the stations I'm picking up/dropping off are actually open at the times I need
- won't let me change CDWs and insurances (and frankly isn't clear about what's included or not).
- it doesn't tell me anywhere what my maximum damage liability is

Over on europcar.com.au -
- it's giving me a price of AU$914 for the apparently the same booking
- advises me that my pickup/dropoff times are outside opening times
- allows me to add extra insurances
- warns me that my unwaivered liability is AU$3,300
- doesn't list Diamond Club as a partner (only Virgin Blue Velocity).

Meanwhile, over at Miles and More, they're a Hertz partner, and Hertz Australia is quoting a cheaper price and does actually recognise M&M and the M&M discount code.

So for Australia, the answer is probably, don't do it.
