Well according to your profile you have no status. If you are 1P or above, you can probably upgrade with regular instruments. Also, it's 15k miles for the upgrade on PS for regular miles, so you can possible clear this way. If you're looking for a quick way from SFO-NYC, I can't see any reason to avoid PS since it's a non-stop and you might be able to save money using a Stopover on a SFO-NUE ticket istead of buying two separate tickets.
