The booking did initially cause the Hotel (NYC) to ring me to "check" it.

I did the EXACT same thing recently, also at a hotel in NYC. My strategy was to book the Thursday in a paid suite, assuming they would let me stay in the same suite as a Plat upgrade for the FWNs. They did.

My results:

A1. Yes.
A2. No.
