You *really* need to define upstate. Harriman != Albany != Ithaca != Buffalo.

But generally the Van Wyck is less evil than the Belt - but we need to do a Yankees game check Also, 280 wouldn't be the way to go anyway, I'd say...rather 80 -> 287 -> Goethals. But that way sucks if you're coming from farther East.

From the East (again, depends how far East) -

Thruway ->

Either:

a) If there's no Yankee game:
Exit 15 -> 17S -> 4E -> GWB -> Deegan/HRD (listen to traffic, but generally Deegan) -> Triborough (not a word on the name, please) -> GCP -> VWE.

b) If there is a Yankee game:
Tappan Zee -> Deegan > CCP E -> HRP S -> Whitestone -> Van Wyck.
