will DL allow a non-refundable TATL ticket to be changed by one day to enable me to attend a family funeral?

Sorry for your loss.
My mother was just able to fullout cancel a ticket one day in advance because my grandmother got very ill. She was going to visit us, but can't now. Delta refunded the money and didn't charge any penalty.
