Why is there such a huge disparity?
That's not too bad. A "free" infant ticket cost me $500 USD once (taxes, fuel charge, fees, etc.) And when I tried to get our family an upgrade using miles, the adults are ok but we were told because the infant ticket was "free" and not purchased that it won't cost our child any miles but it will cost me $1000 in upgrade fee for this "free" ticket on top of the $500 for the ticket.
