Hey, just so you know, $5,000 is not generally considered "a small amount". That weighs about 94 pounds. -I've only dropped off an amount of that magnitude twice, and it was with prior agreement from the manager. (And she told me at the second time that that was it.)
I'd say, to put it in perspective, $125 is a small amount -- $500, or $1,000 or $1,500 are pretty big for a teller or bank. (I usually do $1,500...not saying one can't do more, but watch out for characterizing things as a "small amount" that are way outside the normal realm of usual business.)
I hope if you're planning to pay $30k per month to Citi, you don't live anywhere near me.
Also, on another note (can't do any fancy quoting wirelessly), I used coins to push me over the top on Delta Amex, then SPG Amex and SPG Amex biz and had no probs. YMMV.
BTW, with the new practice of often limiting new Amex accounts to $2,000 CL, there's no way to avoid making extra payments if one wants to "spend $15k within 6 months" -- which is 6 months from application/approval date, by the way. So, coining and paying off then re-coining is effective. Moderation may be a good idea though.
