Why are taxes so high when we redeem tickets?
I remember redeeming a ticket from HK to Sydney and paying over 1000 hkd in taxes + oil surcharges.

This summer I used UA miles to get a ticket from HKG - SFO roundtrip and they only charged me $300 hkd of surcharge.

Why is there such a huge disparity?
