It's not necessarily points expiring, it's that they will close your account ... From Hyatt Gold Passport Terms and Conditions:
9. Your Gold Passport account may be closed at Hyatt's discretion if you do not record Gold Passport stay activity during a 12-month period. All points in the account will be forfeited at that time.
However, as I said, they don't exercise this option (according to someone from Hyatt who had posted here last year).
