If they are arriving at JFK from an international destination, then this would be a very dubious connection. The minimum connection time for international to domestic staying on DL all the way is 105 minutes. Your elderly parents would have to exit the DL terminal, presumably take the SkyTrain to the UA terminal, where they would indeed need to clear security again.
Could you tell us more about their itinerary? And how did you use miles across DL and UA or is that a separate ticket?
