My brother just returned from Rome and strongly recommends l'Antica Enoteca, Via della Croce 76/b (www.anticaenoteca.com) for typical food and matching wines, in a great setting but at moderate prices. Online reviews are excellent as well.

For your information, their advance booking (link from the website) had been initially refused since restaurant was full, but on the day they were actually accommodated with no problem.
