Firstly, if you are planning on doing it "in the box" forget about it. Your best bet is to try everything to get it to the gate, be there early, tell the GA that you need to tag a stroller, then leave it by the door of the plane. I tended to find that when i was gate checking strollers, many times I did so with my wife and son sitting elsewhere and no one ever asked me where he was.
