Yes, CX award availability is hard to get but not impossible. The airline sometimes releases award space about one week prior departure so keep checking. Alternatively you may also try each flight sector by sector instead of just NYC-MNL.
Yes the MNL-HKG segment is wide open, but I was able to change ticket to return in J on flight 888 which stops in YVR. I much prefer the non-stop, but this is better than nothing and I will keep checking for availability. I have a crazy question, if I get to HKG early, would CX allow me to standby for the 5pm non-stop if there is space in J? I doubt it, but it is worth asking because that would get me in the night before instead of the next morning. Thanks for the input.
