Why do you think that? UA's established a set of rules - once you reach a certain level, you get that status. Why should UA ignore its own rules?
You also have some control over your own flying patterns, I'd assume. If you're closing in on a new status level, perhaps you could add an additional segment here or there or take a longer routing to get there faster. If you did this to hit 50K EQMs prior to your 2k mile flight, you'd be able to get a 100% mileage bonus on that flight rather than a 25% mileage bonus.
I just reached 1K and needed to do so before the end of the quarter so I could get 2 additional CR-1s. To reach 1K (by 40 EQMs), I flew SEA-DEN-SMF rather than SEA-SFO-SMF.
