While I can't validate how true everything is you read on the web, but with Shenzhen and Hong Kong being so close to each other, I guess there's a chance pickpockets do their work on both sides of the border. Maybe they have some sort of regional pickpocket business association.
On my trip, I won't be paranoid but will use extra care. I was in Tokyo earlier this month, and felt that was a very safe city. Maybe L.A. is more dangerous than any city in Asia, but since I live here I'm more familiar with things. Going elsewhere I need to ask questions.
Well in theory the gang in China and Hong Kong are disconnected.
Anyway for all the friends I know which have been here ever-since born, I only heard from them having wallet / phone lost because of personal careless. HK is not like Japan that they will find you to give it back to you but still way safer than shenzhen.
I lost my phone 4 times on Taxi and well .. if you lost it on transport your are 50 / 50 for getting it back. There's been repeat instance I heard from radio that the taxi driver was unable to pickup call from iPhone when the owner want to get it back as they don't know how to operate it :P
