Speaking from experience I can tell you this will work in the advantage of status holders in the end. With KLM the exit seats are now sold for money. Even at OLCI you can not select an exit seat without paying for them. Unless you are Gold or Plat.

With KLM I now always have an exit seat since nobody cares as much about 'the good seats' as we think and most people will therefore not pay for them.

In the old days (when exit seats were free) they were gone within 10 minutes of OLCI opening. Not anymore.
