As another person stated, what if you were seated in different areas of the plane and something went wrong?
I was on BA288 in Phoneix in July and had to evacuate down the emergency chutes due to smoke in the cabin just after leaving the gate. I was with my wife and two children, seated in the rear cabin of WT (not treating my kids to anything above WT until they can fully appreciate it, and contribute to the cost as well I may add). My wife was beginning to panic prior to the evac because there was a smell which was causing breathing difficulties. Fortunately I am a fairly calm person and managed to lower her level of stress however I absolutely dread to think what would have happened if we were not sitting together at the time. And after the evac 300+ people were standing on the tarmac, it would have been a nightmare trying to find each other.
So yes, I do want to sit next to my family.
